Silves is located in the Serra de Monchique and has been developed due to the Arade River. People settled here from as long ago as the Iron Age. It was a very important place for the Romans to trade the copper and such products as dried fruits, wine and olive oil.
Since then, it became very popular with scientists and poets alike, who nicknamed it the “birthplace of Arabic-Andalusian poetry.”
The castle and nearby well gave great importance to the city, along with the later built cathedral and mosque. The well is now part of an exhibition at the Museum of Archaeology.
The old cork factory has been used in more recent times as a culture house and various events and performances are held there.
