From the top of the main church tower you will discover the hidden charm of Olhão. Only 14 km from Faro Airport, a 15 minute drive, any tour of Olhão should end among its green gardens and open air cafés at the quayside, but first, take your time and enjoy the colorful atmosphere of the market, where the stands sell fish fresh from the sea, vegetables and fruit fresh from the farms of the countryside. The regular boat connections between the islands of Armona and Culatra offers the opportunity to take a trip along the Ria and visit its charming beaches.

Olhäu is one of the Algarve´s main fishing ports, its square whitewashed houses with flat roof terraces and chimneys a remnant of the moorish architecture. The wives of fishermen gather to pray for their safety when the weather is dangerous behind the church of Nossa Senhora do Rosário, from the 17th century and the chapel of Nossa Senhora dos Aflitos. But nothing like the town´s market, one of the most vibrant and typical of the Algarve, with an enormous variety of seafood, with local farmers selling their products, be it fruit or honey or even live chickens. Nearby, we find the village of Fuzeta similar to Olhão, on a small scale, well known and very much appreciated by windsurfers.

The church of Santo Cristo ,with its beautiful doorway and painted arches, is the proudness of Moncarapacho, which is only a few kilometres inland away. The Parque Natural da Ria Formosa is considered in the region, the most important environment of wildlife in the Algarve. Its lagoons and marshes, channels and islets are full of shellfish, such as cockles, clams and oysters and shelter, amongst other species, a variety of birds such as the cattle egret, the white stork, the purple gallinule, the red-crested pochard, etc. 60 kilometres (40 miles) long is this natural reserve and its rich ecosystem is ideal for the development of varied fauna and flora.
