Climb to the top of the main church tower and discover the hidden charm of Olhão. Only 14 km from Faro Airport, a 15 minute drive, any tour of Olhão should end among the green gardens and open air cafés to be found along the quayside, but first, take a few minutes and breathe in the colorful atmosphere of the market, where the stands sell fresh fish from the sea, fresh vegetables and sweet fruit from the farms of the countryside. The regular boat connections between the islands of Armona and Culatra offers the opportunity to take a trip along the Ria and visit its natural beaches.

Olhäu (read as Olhaun) is one of the Algarve´s main fishing ports, its square whitewashed houses with flat roof terraces and chimneys that witness the ancient architecture of the Moors. The wives of fishermen gather to pray for their safety when the weather is stormy behind the parish church of Nossa Senhora do Rosário, from the 17th century and the chapel of Nossa Senhora dos Aflitos. But the town´s market, one of the most exciting and typical of the Algarve, with an enormous variety of seafood and local farmers selling their products like fruit, honey and live chickens. Nearby, we find the village of Fuzeta which is like Olhão on a small scale and is well known by windsurfers.

A few kilometres inland, in Moncarapacho they are very proud of their church of Santo Cristo, with its beautiful doorway and painted arches. Parque Natural da Ria Formosa is considered in the region, the most important sanctuary of wildlife in the Algarve. Its lagoons, marshes, channels and islets are abundant in shellfish such as cockles, clams and oysters and shelter, amongst other species, a variety of birds such as the cattle egret, the white stork, the purple gallinule, the red-crested pochard, etc. 60 kilometres (40 miles) long is this natural reserve and its rich ecosystem is ideal for the development of varied fauna and flora.
