Lagos is one of the oldest cities in Europe and traces its origins 8,000 years back to the Tartessian era, which gave way to the Tartessians on through many civilizations like the Phoenicians, Carthaginians, Romans, Visigoths, Moors and on to its present day Christian times.

They all have left something of their culture to remind us today of  the great changes which the city and region have gone through in the last centuries.

In the 15th Century, Henry the Navigator settled down in the Lagos area and founded his famous school of Navigation in Sagres, which was then thought to be the end of the earth.

Lagos was the starting point of many of Portugal´s great discovery voyages into the new world, as, for example, Vasco de Gama´s discovery of the trade route to India through the Cape of Good Hope.

Portugal controlled then a large part of the world, bringing back the spoils of exploration. Evidence of this time can be seen in the heart of Lagos where the worlds first slave market still stands today as a tourist attraction, the old city walls, its fortress and churches have recently been renovated and show now their former glory.

According to the legend, the lost city of Atlantis was located where Lagos now stands and evidence of old settlements can be found beneath the waters off the Lagos coast, although this may also be the result of damage caused by the Great Earthquake of 1755.

The City (pop. 18,000) hosts also some of the most luxurious Spa resorts in Europe, soon to be the area with the highest density of 5* hotels in Portugal, the Meia Praia area has received special designation and with EU investment several 5* resorts shall be completed by 2012.

Lagos is growing despite the global economic crisis, many tourists find their way back to this jewel, over and over again, which sustains the growth in tourism along with the property value.

The Local municipality has ensured that all properties built in the area in recent years, have exceeded the national standards which are among the best in the EU.

They have increased awareness of environmental sustainability and most of the towns energy is produced by wind power, not to mention most developments coming with solar installations and high levels of insulation to keep costs to a minimum.

2009/10 has experienced a major transformation of the towns parks and historic sites. The old city walls have been restored and green areas have been implemented in the surroundings, while, at the beaches, access and parking have been improved.

All of this ties in with the recent completion of the A22 motorway which allows to reach the airport in less than one hour.
