Castro Marim has a very rich cultural history.
The remains of the first settlements in the area date back to around 5000BC. As it lies near the banks of the Guadiana and is near to the coast, it used to be a very important port. It was also connected to Lisbon by a Roman road, which used to run parallel to the river.
During the 14th Century, the ‘Order of Christ’ soldiers had their headquarters here. At this time there was a border dispute with Castile. The castle was very well positioned with views across all directions over the Rio Guadiana. Although it has been in a state of disuse since the 17th century, you can still visit the castle to this day and you can take in the beautiful views of Castro Marim and the river.
This typical Portuguese town is tranquil and walkers and cyclists will enjoy it here as there is a lot of countryside to see as well as traditional arts and crafts. There are shops, restaurants and cafes here and this is the perfect place for a more relaxing lifestyle.
