The town itself dates back to the Neolithic and bronze ages with several archaeological digs in the area to prove this history. The town Charter was established on August 20th 1504 and is celebrated annually as the date of the municipal holiday. The great earthquake of 1755 destroyed most of the town apart from a few remaining buildings which are still there today in the heart of the pedestrianized old town.
