Dominated by the foothills of the French Alps, Amphion-Publier boasts the longest coastline on the French side of the lake. The district is made up of the Amphion Plain, on which its economic activity is concentrated (tourist, commercial and industrial areas). An abrupt, wooded slope separates the plain from a plateau, which offers a sumptuous view of the lake and Switzerland, and on which the main town of Publier is located, as well as numerous hamlets.

It was once a thermal resort, especially fashionable during the Second Empire and frequented during its time by the Sardinian court and the Princes of Savoy, who came for its alkaline, ferruginous and sulphurous waters. However, it was eventually overshadowed by the international success of its neighbour, Evian, and the thermal baths have since disappeared. Today, Amphion is a lakeside resort.
