Reputedly named after a deceased Indian Chief named “Bugabas” or “Bugabaes”, the small town of Bugaba features a proud tradition of competition and identity, in everything from football to its history. Created in its former identity by Franciscan missionaries in 1794, and later integrated as a formal district, by law, in 1863, Bugaba has grown and become a place of opposites: at once hidden and isolated, and at the same time offering many of the most basic services for work and recreation available in other parts of the country.

Blessed with fertile soil and an abundance of rivers, the district of Bugaba, where the famed Cerro Punta is located, is a hotspot for agriculturists and artisan florists, who, due to the fantastic ability of the area to produce beautiful and rich flora, are reputed to grow the most spectacular flowers in Panama, and possibly Central America.
