Area Information
The borgo of Conti Ubaldini

Our next restoration project is the borgo “Conti Ubaldini” near Apecchio, in the heart of the Apennines and close to the borders of Umbria and Tuscany.

Historically, Apecchio was a place that offered shelter to many civilizations, including Celts, Umbrians, Etruscans and Romans until the occupancy of the Ubaldini Counts. The magnificent Ubaldini Renaissance Palace still bears testimony to its Ubaldini parentage. Today the Palace hosts a museum that preserves fossils and rare minerals from the Monte Nerone region, and it is reputed to have one of the most beautiful crustacean collections in Europe.

The lush green forests of the region are full of paths which are perfect for those who enjoy walking, horse riding or mountain biking. The healthy climate, the richness of its crystalline waters, low in mineral and sulphur content, combine to make this place an ideal location for those wishing to escape the stresses of today's frenetic lifestyle. The area is also famous for its thermal springs and a thermal spa is due to be built in the area.

The animals that populate the forests mark the purity of this uncontaminated territory: roe and fallow-deer, wild boar, wolves and the undisputed master of the sky, the eagle. The forests are abundant in fruits and, depending on the season, it offers wild strawberries, blackberries, mushrooms and truffles. The mushroom and truffle fair held in Apecchio on the first Sunday of October is a spectacle not to be missed.

Nearby Monte Nerone is not just of interest to palaeontology students in search of fossils, it also attracts tourists both during the winter months for skiing, and during the summer for its many natural grottoes, like those at Tassare, with characteristic underground lakes that can be explored with a guided tour.
The world’s largest globe built by one person, listed in the Guinness Book of Records, can be viewed on the way up Monte Nerone.

Thanks to its strategic position, the Borgo of Apecchio is at a crossroads between the Marche, Umbria and Tuscany, being 20 km from Città di Castello, 35 km from Arezzo, and 60 km from Perugia; Perugia has an airport which can provide links to international routes via Milano Malpensa airport.

On the Marche side Apecchio is 45 km from Urbino, 75 km from Fano (the Adriatic Sea and autostrada A14) and 100 km from Ancona airport, which is served daily from the UK by Ryanair flights.
